Is this possible? to mill a body out of Plexyglass or something? so it's clear??

has anyone ever pondered this? I believe it would work.. thoughts??

I don't remember where I got this pic from, but someone milled a cocker body out of Lexan. So it would be possible. The thing that I've always wanted to see done would be a carbon fiber body. Of course you'd have to have aluminum inserts for the tubes and anything with threads in it...

cool!!! Thats what i wanted to know!! So, I guess it wouldnt be all too hard if you had thread-tapping abilities like most of the techs here do..

Would it be possible for someone to make one? I'd provide the materials, i/e lexan- I'm thinking a solid piece about 11x4x1.5

would those measurments be adaquate for Tribals? (I'm just guessing, I havent measured it yet.)

I know it has been discussed conceptually on sites like the TInkers Guild on Docsmachine. The materials that are clear can be inherently difficult to work with. Lexan, plastic, Glass, Pyrex, Acrylic. They all tend to shatter or crack when drilled, too soft to tap. Not impossible of course, but difficult. Especially for a one-off typer marker. You would have to do a lot of polishing to get it clear again after drilling and milling.

There are plenty of airsoft guns that are clear, but the dynamics are quite different. Lower pressure / velocity.

It is an interesting challenge.

It is an interesting challenge.

Indeed. I dont have the means to experiment with this sort of thing(no milling capabilities), but I will offer the material if someone would like to take on such a task. but first i got to find something to work with.

Any takers?

Materials are not the problem.....it is tooling. Your talking about several hundred just to get geared up. Plus all the labor!!!

Maybe Rich (me262) could do it as he said he was able to machine tribal bodies.

wow.. ok, well I didnt think it would be quite taht much,... but it sure would be cool!!

maybe I will talk to Me262 about it. Thanks Edwin

You know what would be easier...

A stacked tube style like a PGP using extruded lexan and adhesive with stock valves. In fact there was a smoke colored pump pistol like that. They were plastic and not very good. ( The Sidekick)

Or a clamshell moulded marker, like a Tippman Model 98. You could mill that out with a CNC fairly easily with the right blank.

Just kicking it around.

Just buy this...you know you want to:

Andy the carbon fiber gun has been done.

Ken from K&P Customs made a cocker body out of G10 carbon fiber. ITs super light. However since the material is tough to work with and you need inserts, he usually charges $350- $400 a body.

I knew someone had done it in the past, just wasn't sure who it was. I just really like the way carbon fiber looks and how incredibly strong it is for its weight.

If anyone is seriously interested in trying to do this I'll donate the piece of Plexiglas. I've got a fairly sizable piece of 1 and 1/8 BR plexi I would be happy to send someone a piece of.

I would like to attempt it, but not for myself. Tooling would be too much for it to become one more of many projects I have around here.

What I really wanted to do is make one out of Magnesium. Something similar to a Twister without all the ribs.

That would be super light and fairly strong too!!!

Just don't smoke your cigarettes around it!

Haha, yep Magnesium is a bit tricky to machine. They recommend heavy cuts to help keep the chips from burning up.

Yeah, I guess it wouldn't be a good idea to have very small hot magnesium chips around now would it. You could just run it under a coolant system and not worry about it though.

yeah that would be an interesting one considering magnesium is a key componet in 731 thermite which burns hot enough to sustain itself under water. hence the reason they use ti to weld underwater.

i wouldn't want to mess with that but someone must be a brave soul here

Heh, don't look for me to start cutting magnesium on my new mill!

Edwin

Don't worry Magnesium is machinable!!!

The chips are what usually burns, not the part.

Don't worry guy. If I do mill magnesium, I will use coolant, and I will be careful.

there's a guy that owns our local proshop that is like, a cocker-freak, that made a body out of some type of clear plastic, hell it might even be that picture... I thought he said he make it for demonstration purposes only though, with either no air in it, or very low pressures...

just thought i would bring this thread back to life....has anyone done it yet? if not thats :abs2:

Edwin

No one here.
It could be done, but you would need threaded inserts, and you would have to build it up so it could handle the HP and stresses of play. Maybe a good back marker.

The thing that would worry me the most is getting it scratched up and no longer clear. Furthermore you would have to polish every surface just to keep it clear.

Here's the latest reincarnation on the clear cocker: http://www.pbnation.com/showthread.php?t=1589017

Not that I was looking at that "other" forum or anything...
